A Gentleman Should Know: Nick Wooster

People YOU should know:  Nick Wooster

Nick Wooster was born in Austria (not Australia) in 1472. He was given birth to in a barn, much like baby Jesus. He was placed in a cot made out of hay, cheese...

No.  He wasn't.  But this was one of the first bits of info that I came across when looking for the particulars on Mr. Wooster.

Nick Wooster is the Men's Fashion Director for Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.  He has established himself as a streetfashion militiaman and guru of all things gentlemanly.  He is also style advisor to GiltMan as well as Park&Bond.

If you have ever wondered how to realize an intercourse of mature/elegant masculinity with street-savvy trends, Nick Wooster is your man.  His passion for esthetic as well as attention to detail and badass-poise makes Nick Wooster an inspiration to me.

Every man needs a mentor.  He needs a hero.  If you are in the market for a new one, give Nick a try.  Next time you are lacking inspiration for  a new haircut or wardrobe, spend a little time getting to know Mr. Wooster.  Punch his name into your google and explore the results as you would an abandoned mansion full of paintings, pictures and rooms.  As you explore the images and articles, pay close attention to how Nick has decided to present himself and why.  I am confident that you will find a little something that resonates with you.

Go on.  Get inspired. http://nickwooster.com/

Celebrity Hairstyle: Morrissey Haircut

Morrissey- Steven Patrick Morrissey:
English singer and lyricist

A fine fellow by the name of Max brought my attention to this iconic hairstyle.  He had a great head of hair and just enough length to pull it off.  So, after browsing a few different adaptations, we went for it.

A haircut like this is great for many reasons.  I love it because it gives the wearer the clean and lean lines of sophistication around the neck and ears while maintaining plenty of movement and personality up top.  It's a great balance of polish and texture.

If YOU want to rock this style yourself you'll need:
Medium-Thick Hair Density
Medium-Coarse-Wavy Hair Texture
Strong Jaw-line and pronounced features
A Great Barber to tailor-fit the cut to you

This Haircut will:
Lengthen you headshape and face
Lean out your features
Emphasize Strong Jaw, Chin and Cheek Bones

What to tell your Barber:
Exaggerated version of a classic Short-to-Long
Slight taper on the sides and back
Tight and clean around the ears
Clippers around the perimeter (#2) Blended with scissors into length on top
Maximum length and Movement up top (around 3 inches length)

Best Advice:
Take a picture with you!

Haircut for Men Celebrity Hairstyle: Jude Law Sherlock Holmes Watson

Jude Law: English Actor/Director
Born: December 29th, 1972
Height: 5'11"
Face Shape: Oval with Strong chin/Jaw
Hair Type: Medium Curly
Hair Density: Average Receding (hardly anyone make a recession look as good)

There is a renewed interest in Jude Law with the newly released Sherlock Holmes movie.  It's always interesting to watch such films with the eye of a barber.  The various haircuts and hairstyles really jump out and inspire.  Especially in a more old fashioned context like the Sherlock Holmes franchise.

A bit of sideburns and a mustache gives him a very mature and masculine look.
A bit more contemporary and playful.  A bit more length adds some youthfulness.

Celebrity Men's Hair Styles: Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr
With the release of the second Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr, I figured it would be of interest to showcase a few of the various hairstyles and haircuts that the leading man has worn over the years.  If you have similar features and hair type to Bob D. Jr, chances are a few of these styles may look pretty good on you.

Robert Downey Jr
Born: April 4th 1965
Hair Type: Medium Wavy
Density: Medium
Face Shape: Oval
Height: 5' 8"
A bit of length allows his natural wave to show

Tight with clippers around the perimeter tapered into fair amount of length up top. Very studious.  Very 90s

The loose and mischievous Sherlock look.

Straight forward crop cut.  Still a slight taper to the sides.

Iron Man.  Good look. Enough length to have some personality.  Looks great with a suit.
If you would like to try any of the above styles for yourself, simply take the picture in to your barber and show him.  If you live in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, bring the picture in to me and I'll take care of you.

Rockstar Hair: Chris Cornell

He's one of my favorite vocalists. Naturally, I was interested in what different hair styles he's taken on tour and around the world. If you're looking for a new haircut or style, Chris Cornell is a great guy to look at.

Recent Haircut

This is a cut we did for a great friend of mine. It's about 95 degrees outside and he wanted to freshen things up a bit. He came in with fairly short hair already, but wanted to change his style! You have probably run into the same situation. We all know it's hard to make money telling men with short hair that there is nothing we can do until they grow their hair out a bit. Plus, there's no guarantee, if we ask them to come back in a few weeks, that they will. We decided to emphasize the length he DID have up top by throwing in a clean and classy fade aspect to his perimeter. What do you think?

This, to me is the essence of being a bespoke barber. It's all about custom tailoring a style. It's about executing a great cut with precision and patience. Bespoke barbering is not only about technical skill, but also applying great cuts to the right people in the right way.

Rockstar Hair: James Hetfield

Few have commanded such a presence on stage as James Hetfield. Metallica's ferocious front man James Hetfield has also brought some interesting hair to the table. Who wouldn't want a peek at how JH, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, has seen fit to express his style and image?

Haircut of the Day: Clean Texture

Short and clean with plenty of texture. Hair is cut to about finger length on the sides and fairly long on top. Some blending through the parietal is good but not so much that you create too much of a Faux Hawk look. The is a scissor and possibly a razor cut. Well suited for all hair types. For particularly straight or coarse hair, a bit more length on the sides would be advisable so that the hair is long enough to lay down well. The style is just as messy as you want to make it. Products would be fiber pastes or styling creams with a matte finish. Redken makes several great products for a cut and style like this. Maneuver and Dishevel are my favorites.

Classic Coiffure: The cuts and styles of Famous Painters

This is a catalog of some hairstyles and facial hair of some of my favorite artists/painters. As far as Barbering goes, one of my favorite places to look for new ideas and inspiration is in the people that have been so inspirational in their own medium. As you can imagine, looking to creative geniuses for new ideas just makes sense to me.
Alfons Mucha (Czech art nouveau painter)
Gustav Klimt (Austrian symbolist painter)
Piet Mondrian (Dutch Painter)
Salvador Dali (Spanish Catalan surrealist painter)
Vincent Van Gogh (Dutch post-impressionist painter)

Haircut of the Day: James Dean

James Dean- This cut and style are certainly suited to medium wavy-curly hair. A great balance of lived-in casual and polished style. Clean and short haircuts don't have to feel so severe or clean-cut.
